A critical appeal is being made via LinkedIn to the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the Ambassador of Finland to Nigeria (Sanna Selin) regarding the Schengen visa application of Oladotun Ajayi, a dedicated graduate nursing student, whose participation in the upcoming 2025 ICN Conference in Helsinki, Finland, is now in a precarious position!

Despite his significant credentials and the profound value his attendance would bring, his initial application has been denied, citing concerns about his intention to return to Nigeria.

This decision necessitates urgent reconsideration to ensure that a promising young leader is not prevented from contributing to and learning from this pivotal global gathering of nurses.

Oladotun Ajayi is not only a graduate nursing student currently interning at Evercare Hospital in Nigeria but also a proactive and impactful advocate for youth empowerment.

Recognising the critical issue of unemployment among young people, he strategically utilises LinkedIn to democratize opportunities and provide pathways for professional growth.

His commitment extends beyond his immediate professional sphere, demonstrating a genuine dedication to uplifting his community.

This dedication and his burgeoning expertise in nursing earned him the distinct honour of being selected as one of the few young nurse delegates to represent Nigeria at the 2025 ICN Conference.

This prestigious event, themed “Nursing Power to Change the World,” unites nursing professionals from over 120 countries, offering an unparalleled platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.

Oladotun was also confirmed to participate in the student assembly, a vital component of the conference focused on engaging the next generation of nursing leaders.

His participation represents a unique opportunity to gain insights into global nursing innovation, share his unique perspectives, and establish crucial international connections that could significantly benefit the Nigerian healthcare ecosystem upon his return.

However, the denial of his Schengen visa, based on “reasonable doubts” regarding his intention to leave Finland, poses a significant threat to his ability to attend this crucial conference.

Oladotun has provided comprehensive documentation and remains willing to offer any further assurances required to demonstrate his commitment to his career and his country.

As a “young career-driven professional,” his primary focus remains on contributing to the advancement of healthcare and empowering future generations in Nigeria. His attendance at the ICN Conference is viewed as a strategic investment in his professional development and his capacity to contribute more effectively to the Nigerian healthcare ecosystem on a global scale.

Given the rapidly approaching commencement of the ICN Conference in the first week of June and the limited availability of visa reappointment slots before the end of May, time is of the essence!

The narrow window for reapplication risks precluding Oladotun’s participation entirely.

Therefore, a strong appeal is made to the ICN and the Ambassador of Finland to Nigeria to urgently review Oladotun Ajayi’s case.

His credentials as a dedicated young professional and the clear benefits of his attendance at the conference warrant a reassessment of the initial visa decision.

Facilitating his participation would not only empower a promising young nurse leader but also enable Nigeria to be represented by a passionate and forward-thinking individual on a significant global platform.

We urge a swift and positive reconsideration to ensure that Oladotun Ajayi is afforded the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the 2025 ICN Conference.
