Foreword By Prof. Prisca Adejumo

Charting New Territories

My first encounter with Oluwadamilare Akingbade was in 2015 when he was a student in our MSc program at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Ibadan. I remember vividly a particular class in NSG 725 where he and a colleague presented on Expanding Role of Nurses in Nigeria: Prospects and Challenges. His passion was unmistakable that day. His voice carried conviction, his vision for nursing was bold, and his presentation left an impression on me. He stood out as a young man with unusual curiosity and purpose.

Ten years later, as I write this foreword, I cannot but reflect on the journey I have witnessed. I have seen Oluwadamilare carry a seed of vision from those early days when he dreamed of starting an Institute of Nursing Research as a graduate student, to now becoming a recognized Global Nurse Consultant. It has been great mentoring him through many of these stages: from his service at the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, to his PhD journey at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, to his role as Project Manager at the organization I founded—Focusing on Young Nurses Initiative—and later as a faculty member during my tenure as Dean at Chrisland University, Nigeria. Each stage revealed the same traits I saw that first day: vision, discipline, and an unwavering sense of purpose.

Charting New Territories is a story of faith and resilience. The chapters take you from his early struggles and defining experiences in Nigeria, to the rigorous research training and transformative global exposure in Hong Kong, to the ground-breaking opportunities in Canada. What I find remarkable in this story is how often the next season of his life began in what looked like an inconvenient or uncertain time, a lesson for all of us. You will see, in these pages, that progress rarely comes with perfect conditions. His journey proves that the courage to take the first step often unlocks the future. I am particularly proud of the way this book highlights the importance of mentorship and community. As you read, you will notice how relationships with teachers, mentors, peers, faith communities, and even his own mentees played a critical role in opening doors and sustaining progress. It affirms what I have always believed: no one succeeds alone.

This book will speak to anyone standing at the edge of a new chapter, whether you are a student uncertain of your path, a professional wondering if you are ready for the global stage, or an innovator afraid to launch that idea. Through his honest storytelling, Dr. Akingbade reminds us that faith in God can anchor you, resilience can turn setbacks into stepping-stones, preparation creates opportunities, and a clear vision can chart your course across borders.

As his mentor and as someone who has watched this journey unfold, I am deeply proud of the man he has become—one whose story now serves as a map and a mirror for others. May this book ignite courage in you to take your own next step, wherever it may lead.
