Launching of The Congenital Heart Diseases Foundation of Nigeria: A Brief Discuss, An Interview And More

An initiative that is poised to make great contributions to the world of Cardiac Health in Nigeria. Congenital Heart Disease Foundation of Nigeria has joined the army of healthcare defenders in the country. Founded on the brilliant initiative of young healthcare professionals who are ready to make great changes in the healthcare sector of Nigeria, with the power of community, research, and innovation.

The foundation is dedicated to supporting children [and their parents] who are living with different forms of congenital heart defects with every tool that they can lay their hands on; from finance to community and healthy and accurate information.

“About 25% of babies with a CHD have a critical CHD. Infants with critical CHDs generally need surgery or other procedures in their first year of life.”

Oyeleye Christianah Oyebusola who is a Cardiothoracic Nurse practicing in Babcock University Teaching Hospital Nigeria is the leader of this innovative initiative. She’s a registered nurse that I have interacted with and I must confess that her passion to make a positive impact in the healthcare sector of Nigeria is palpable, genuine, and infectious.

When asked where she got her inspiration from, she said that she is passionate about the health of children living with congenital heart defects, she feels that more can be done for them. “I practically heard a particular baby look into my face and told me don’t keep quiet, save our lives.” Oyeleye Christianah Oyebusola there trying to explain the source of her passion for children living with congenital heart defects. We all have those dramatic, magical and memorable moments that have been able to shape our paths and put us on the golden lane of destiny.

When asked her how she felt about the launching, she had this to say “The launching makes me feel more committed to the path that I have chosen.”

“The prevalence of previously undiagnosed CHD among school children in Lagos Nigeria is substantial and highlights gaps in the health care system and school health programs. Echocardiographic screening of school children provides an opportunity for missed early diagnosis and treatment of CHD and reduces the prevalence of first‐diagnosed CHD in adulthood. Therefore, focused clinical examination of school children followed by echocardiography is a strategy that could bridge this diagnostic and treatment gap in CHD.”

Mission statement

To create a paradigm shift in the current status of Congenital Heart Disease management in Nigeria through advocacy, support, public engagement, and research promotion.

Vision Statement

To become the largest charity group in Nigeria supporting the CHD course in Nigeria and helping CHD warriors lead their best possible life.

There are Four (4) major angles to our existence:

Support: financial (fundraising n sponsorship), emotional n physical support (in the nearest future when we have physical edifices.

Public Engagements: Will be our campaigns, outreach, and our website/blog/

Advocacy: That’s at the top level in government or to the Ministry of health to incorporate policies into the healthcare system that will help in improving how Congenital Heart Defects are managed, in terms of surveillance, public health awareness, early screenings etc.

We are also inspired to work with foreign organizations that believe in our vision as we together, through financial support and all other forms of support give these heart heroes an opportunity to be their very best in life.

Education, Innovation and research: We would encourage research among healthcare workers in the care of CHD patients/clients. And we are starting from where we grew out from (TRISTATE/BUTH).

Our activities and engagements will be featured on our Blog/Website, and as time goes on, we plan to begin having physical engagements and programmes that are targeted at propagating our visions, goals and objectives as a community.

We already have bodies we can collaborate with in this regard, using digital health platforms dedicated to utilizing the power of Artificial Intelligence to improve Cardiac Health.

About Christianah Olaleye Oyebusola

Oyeleye Christianah Oyebusola is a Nigeria trained Cardiac Nurse with about 10 years experience. She had her basic primary and secondary education at Paragon International Group of schools, she served in the capacity as the health prefect .

She got admission into the Ogun State School of Nursing (SONAB) in 2009 and bagged her R.N. Post Certification as a Registered Nurse, she started work at the Gideon Orphanage home, where she developed loved for Children, she also worked with Prince Specialist Hospital, Asero Abeokuta before proceeding to Day Waterman College Ogun State. The motto of the school “towards surpassing the most demanding available standards anywhere in the world” inspired her a lot to surpass the most demanding available standards in her chosen field.

After losing one of her mothers to Cardiac Disease, she determined to get very knowledge about Cardiac Health and then furthered her nursing education into the Post graduate school of Cardiothoracic Nursing between 2015 and 2016.

She since then started work at the Tristate Heart and Vascular Centre where she fell in love with Cardiology. Her vast experience in this field coupled with her love for children grew her interest in Paediatric Congenital Heart Disease and brought about the initiation of a heart foundation open to all Nigeria children diagnosed with CHD.

She is kind, loving and passionate about her job, she sees the best in people and loves to help others to be the best version of themselves.
She is a Christian, lover of Art and craft and is open to learning new things. She has volunteered and assumed roles in different capacity. She is interested in education, technology, servant leadership.
